Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) - LAC & PLAC
This course provides a comprehensive, evidence-based introduction to autism, with a specific focus on supporting looked after (LAC) and previously looked after children (PLAC).
Designed for professionals working in education, social care, parent, carers and residential settings, the training explores autism through a neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-informed lens, recognising that many children in care may present with overlapping needs.
Participants will develop a deeper understanding of how autism affects communication, behaviour, sensory processing, and emotional regulation, and how these differences can sometimes be misunderstood, particularly where trauma is also present.
The course also examines the UK diagnostic process, including NHS and Right to Choose pathways, and highlights the challenges faced by looked after children in accessing timely and accurate assessment.
A strong emphasis is placed on practical, real-world strategies, equipping participants with tools to support autistic children effectively, build trusting relationships, and create environments where children feel safe, understood, and able to thrive.
